Herbal Tea
Herbal tea is a traditional beverage and embodiment of folk wisdom rooted in Chinese medical theory, prevalent in the South China region. With over a century of history in Hong Kong, it was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006 and remains one of Hong Kong's important intangible cultural heritage items today. Made from herbal plants, its formulations emphasize the principle of "medicinal and edible homology." Adapted to the damp climate and heaty waters of South China, different types of herbal tea have become part of the unique food culture of the region in order to prevent the heat and damp symptom-complex, to cool the body and prevent the common cold. Herbal tea shops are mostly small family-run businesses, with recipes often kept secret, making them culturally symbolic local landmarks in Hong Kong's streets and alleys.
